Even in a crisis, everyone deserves real food
The PRO-RATION principle
Far more likely scenarios include:
- Power outage
- Flooding
- Severe storm
- Forest fire
- Blizzard
- Evacuation
- Disruption to transport links
- Communications disruption
- Water supply failure
- Another major infrastructure failure
These can create a situation where the everyday services you take for granted are no longer available.
Food supplies
A shop may be nearby, but that does not necessarily mean you can get there or pay during a power cut.
You may have a freezer full of food at home, but during a prolonged power cut, its contents quickly become a problem rather than a reserve.
Water supplies
Water may flow from your tap every day until a fault or a risk of contamination interrupts the supply. A power cut can also leave you without water, depending on how water reaches your home.
- In a block of flats, water may still be available at first because there is pressure in the mains. During a prolonged outage, however, the water supply may stop because pumps and water treatment require electricity.
- In a detached house with its own borehole, the water supply usually stops immediately because the borehole pump runs on electricity. Only the water in the pressure tank remains.
The point of emergency supplies is not just to prepare for the worst possible scenario. The aim is to give you or your family TIME TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT – a period during which you are not entirely dependent on shops, electricity, gas, the water supply or functioning logistics.
This principle led to the creation of PRO-RATION, a food solution designed for emergencies and outdoor use, combining features that are usually difficult to bring together in a single product:
- Natural, real food – ready-to-eat meals that are not dehydrated;
- Great taste – venison ragout, Tandoori quinoa, meatballs, bread pudding with apples and cinnamon, etc.;
- Very long shelf life – food 15 years, water 50 years;
- Ready to eat – eat cold or heat up;
- Easy to heat – even without electricity or a wood-burning cooker;
- Storage at 0–40 °C – no special conditions required.
Emergency supplies are not about panic – they are about informed risk management
You do not buy a fire extinguisher for your home because you expect a fire. You do not fasten your seat belt because you plan to have an accident.
The same applies to emergency supplies. Their purpose is to reduce your dependence on external systems when those systems temporarily stop working.
Take a widespread power cut, for example. Without electricity, payment terminals, petrol stations, lifts, some heating systems, communication devices and various parts of the water supply system may stop working. A prolonged outage may also disrupt food distribution.
During a flood, severe storm or blizzard, the problem may instead be getting around. Roads may become impassable, public transport may grind to a halt and deliveries to shops may be interrupted.
Evacuation presents the opposite problem: your food must be something you can quickly take with you and use without a kitchen.
This is why food for your emergency supplies must meet very different requirements from the food you normally buy for dinner. It must:
- have a long shelf life;
- be energy-rich;
- withstand transport;
- be quick to use;
- where possible, not require electricity, gas or a cooker.
And something that is often forgotten – it should taste good too.
PRO-RATION 100% natural meals have a 15-year shelf life
For example, PRO-RATION Kana Korma riisiga contains, among other ingredients, 30% chicken fillet, brown rice, cream, onion, coconut milk, desiccated coconut, rapeseed oil, garlic, lemon and various spices such as coriander, caraway, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric and ginger.
Veiselihaguljašš kartulitega contains 36% potatoes and 30% beef, along with onion, rice and corn flour, rapeseed oil, tomato purée, garlic, paprika, caraway, marjoram and pepper.
For vegans, options include Tandoori kinoa, which contains sweet potato, vegetable stock, quinoa, tomato, chickpeas, red onion, lemon juice, olive oil, ginger and spices.
This means you will find largely the same ingredients in these meals as you use to prepare dinner in your own kitchen. PRO-RATION meals are 100% natural.
Large PRO-RATION emergency food and water supply
The food kit contains:
- 23 main meals (400 g)
- 12 drinking water packs (330 ml)
- 23 flameless heaters
- 2 sealable heating bags
- 4 spoons
PRO-RATION emergency drinking water has a 50-year shelf life
Water is an even more critical resource than food. You can survive far longer without food than without water, and the water supply may be one of the first infrastructure services to be disrupted in a crisis.
The PRO-RATION emergency range uses sterilised drinking water with a shelf life of 50 years.
This drinking water is deep-filtered and sterilised, with no added preservatives or other chemicals. The water is sealed in special barrier packaging designed to withstand external influences.
The PRO-RATION emergency water supply contains 47 × 330 ml water pouches, providing a total of 15.5 litres of water:
PRO-RATION one-day food pack
Emergency food packs contain 2 main meals (400 g), 2 energy bars (40 g), 2 drinking water pouches (330 ml), 2 spoons and 2 flameless heaters.
Note: the red packaging serves as the heating bag.
This is a one-day food supply for one person.
PRO-RATION delicious main meals
You can also buy main meals separately, for example to supplement a larger emergency stockpile. They are ideal for taking on hikes or for employers to provide to employees who spend their working day far from anywhere to get lunch.
You are sure to find your favourite, as well as some exciting variety:
- Venison ragout
- Beef goulash
- Chicken in wild sauce with rice
- Meatballs with basmati rice and tomato sauce
- Swedish meatballs with cream sauce and mashed potatoes
- Tandoori quinoa (vegan)
- Bread pudding with apples and cinnamon
Energy bars
You can also buy Adventure Menu energy bars separately in a variety of flavours, designed for situations where you need plenty of energy from a small, lightweight snack.
Packed with nuts, seeds and fruit, they provide both quick-release and longer-lasting energy.
The bars are compact and ready to eat, making them ideal for your emergency supplies, hiking bag or car, or as an energy-rich everyday snack.
Their 15-year shelf life makes them particularly valuable for your emergency supplies. You can stock up on energy-rich food that does not need frequent replacement and that you can rely on when needed.
Preparing food: no electricity, no matches!
Another important consideration in a crisis is how you prepare your food. If the power goes out, your electric cooker will not work. If there is no gas, you cannot use a gas cooker. In an evacuation centre or a car, using an open flame may not be possible at all.
PRO-RATION sterilised main meals are ready-made. This means you do not need to cook them from scratch or add water to them. If necessary, you can heat the food without a conventional kitchen.
Products in the emergency range include a flameless heating system, which allows you to heat food without electricity, gas or a cooker.
The emergency supply packs include a quicklime heating pad, water sachets and a separate, larger heating bag that fits the main meal pouch inside.
Heating is simple:
- Remove the heating pad from its packaging and knead it gently between your fingers.
- Place the pad at the bottom of the heating bag.
- Place the sealed food pouch inside the heating bag.
- Pour approximately 90 ml of water into the bag.
- When the water comes into contact with the quicklime, a chemical reaction produces temperatures of up to 100 °C.
- Close the top of the heating bag, leaving a small opening for steam to escape.
- Wait about 10 minutes and enjoy your hot meal.
In a crisis, this makes a very important difference. Having food alone is not enough if eating it requires equipment you cannot use because of the crisis. A good emergency solution needs to be as self-contained as possible.
How does natural food keep for 15 years?
Without preservatives, it may initially seem surprising that a ready meal containing meat, vegetables, sauces, rice or potatoes can keep for up to 15 years. The answer lies in the production process, hermetically sealed packaging and sterilisation.
PRO-RATION food is initially prepared in much the same way as in a conventional kitchen. Meat is steam-cooked, sauces are prepared slowly in cooking kettles, and vegetables are heated under controlled conditions to preserve their texture and flavour as well as possible.
Only then does the most technologically important part of the process begin. Each prepared portion is hermetically sealed and sterilised in a steam autoclave.
Autoclaving is a sterilisation method in which microorganisms are destroyed using high-temperature saturated steam under pressure.
Because the food is hermetically sealed from the external environment after processing, chemical preservatives are not needed to achieve a long shelf life.
The long shelf life is achieved through technological processing and packaging, not by adding preservatives.
Storing food at 0–40 °C
Under normal storage conditions, your food supplies will keep for 15 years, ready for when you really need them.
This significantly reduces the effort needed to manage your emergency supplies. While ordinary tinned food and other foods with a shorter shelf life require you to keep checking dates and rotating your supplies regularly, a 15-year shelf life allows you to build up a much longer-term reserve.
The foods can also withstand higher or lower temperatures for short periods, but prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or major temperature fluctuations may affect their shelf life. For example, if you keep your emergency supplies in a car at all times, you should replace the food more frequently.
PRO-RATION foods do not require special storage conditions.
- They do not need a fridge.
- They do not need a freezer.
- They do not require a conventional cold chain.
Why does the taste of food matter more in a crisis than you might think?
When discussing emergency food, the focus is usually on calories and shelf life. These are naturally important, but food is more than just a source of energy.
A tasty, hot meal also affects how you feel. The creators of PRO-RATION emphasise that, in a crisis, food must provide not only energy but also a morale boost. This principle was not dreamed up in a marketing meeting, but grew out of practical feedback from real crisis zones.
PRO-RATION emergency food and drink packs grew out of the Adventure Menu team's experience and the needs of rescue workers, firefighters and other professionals working outdoors. During development, the same problem came up repeatedly: conventional tactical and emergency ration packs might technically do their job, but their taste, energy content, nutritional value or ease of use did not always meet people's actual needs in harsh conditions.
PRO-RATION decided to approach the problem from a different angle.
The question was not simply how to make food last as long as possible.
The question was: how do you prepare real food and give it an exceptionally long shelf life, while ensuring that, even years later, it is still food you actually want to eat?
PRO-RATION took over two years to develop, with input from professionals ranging from firefighters and paramedics to Czech armed forces units, military personnel from other countries and civilian crisis preparedness specialists.
The Czech company Adventure Menu is behind PRO-RATION
PRO-RATION did not start from scratch. Behind the brand is the team at the Czech company Adventure Menu, with extensive experience in preparing food for outdoor use and extreme conditions. The PRO-RATION range draws on around 15 years of experience with food used outdoors and on expeditions around the world.
The team includes chefs, outdoor enthusiasts and people who value both the quality of food and its practical purpose.
The PRO-RATION philosophy can be summed up simply: even in a crisis, you deserve real food.
The main meals are handmade from fresh ingredients in a kitchen at the foot of the Krkonoše mountains in Czechia. PRO-RATION sees its product not simply as “emergency calories”, but as food that must fulfil both a gastronomic and a technical purpose.
What does emergency food with a 15-year shelf life taste like?
For many people, the term “emergency food” conjures up images of tasteless dry food, powder or an unidentifiable brown mass of calories.
PRO-RATION has deliberately moved away from this image. The food is prepared as a proper meal and only then preserved using a technological process.
That is why the range includes dishes such as:
- Beef goulash with potatoes
- Venison ragout with potatoes
- Meatballs with basmati rice and tomato sauce
- Swedish meatballs in cream sauce with mashed potatoes
- Chicken in wild sauce with rice
- Bread pudding with apples and cinnamon
These are not simply variations of the same basic meal with different seasonings. They use different recipes and different main ingredients.
Quality energy for the whole day
Your emergency food supplies need to provide energy, not just fill your stomach. PRO-RATION emergency food kits contain more than just main meals.
The packs combine main meals with energy-rich bars, water and essential accessories. The energy and nutrient content varies between menus.
For example, the Menu I food pack provides a total of approximately 1584 kcal, 92 g of protein, 160 g of carbohydrates and 63 g of fat. Menu II provides approximately 1538 kcal, 73 g of protein, 144 g of carbohydrates and 77 g of fat.
The vegan menu provides approximately 1399 kcal, 56 g of protein, 171 g of carbohydrates and 57 g of fat.
This shows that emergency food is about more than simply having “something to eat” in the pack. The balance of energy, protein, fats and carbohydrates is also taken into account.
This is especially important during physical exertion – for example, during rescue operations, evacuation, long journeys on foot or when spending time in cold conditions.
72 hours can make a big difference
The PRO-RATION emergency food and drink kit is designed to cover 72 hours and contains 23 main meals for four people, additional food items with a long shelf life, water and accessories. The total energy content of all the food in the box is 13 948 kcal.
Why 72 hours?
The first few days of a crisis can be the most chaotic. Emergency services and government agencies need to direct their resources to where help is needed most urgently. The more people can meet their own basic needs during this time, the less pressure there is on the system as a whole.
That is why keeping emergency supplies at home is not just a matter of personal comfort. It is part of society’s overall resilience.
If you and your family have water, food, light sources, medicines, means of communication and other essentials, you can cope much better with a temporary disruption.
What kind of crisis should you prepare for?
The better question is actually: which everyday services could become unavailable in a crisis?
- Electricity
- Water
- Heating
- Communications
- Transport
- Supplies to shops
- Payment systems
- Fuel
If you prepare for these services to be temporarily unavailable, you automatically prepare for a wide range of crises.
The same food and water supplies can be useful in a flood, snowstorm, power cut, evacuation, supply disruption, major technical failure or security crisis.
That is why fear does not have to be your reason for building up emergency supplies. The reason is preparedness.
Why choose PRO-RATION long-life food for your emergency supplies?
The biggest practical challenge with emergency supplies is often not buying them, but managing them.
If your supplies consist of dozens of different everyday foods with a shelf life of one, two or three years, you need to check dates regularly, use up older products and buy replacements.
The longer the shelf life, the less there is to manage.
With a shelf life of up to 15 years, PRO-RATION main meals and energy products allow you to build up emergency supplies for the long term. Drinking water supplies with a shelf life of up to 50 years reduce the need for stock rotation even further.
This matters both at home and in businesses, where regularly replacing larger emergency supplies can become a significant logistical task.
What makes the PRO-RATION solution special?
PRO-RATION’s strength lies not in a single feature, but in the combination of features.
- Main meals with a shelf life of up to 15 years
- Sterilised drinking water with a shelf life of up to 50 years
- 100% natural main meals
- No chemical preservatives used to extend the shelf life of main meals
- Food prepared by real chefs
- Hermetic packaging and sterilisation in a steam autoclave
- The option to heat food without electricity, gas or a cooker
- A system developed in collaboration with professionals
- Compact packaging suitable for transport
- Both standard and vegan options available
It is this combination of features that makes PRO-RATION the best possible solution for preparedness.
Preparedness starts before a crisis
There is a paradox when it comes to emergency supplies. Once a crisis has begun, it is already too late to stock up.
After a storm warning, shops can quickly run out of drinking water, batteries and long-life food. During a power cut, your water supply may stop and payment systems may not work. When an evacuation order arrives, there is no longer time to start thinking about what to eat over the next three days.
A good emergency stockpile sits unused most of the time. That is the whole point. Like a fire extinguisher. Like a first aid kit. Like a smoke alarm. It eases your fears and gives you peace of mind.
Stock up on at least a week's supply of emergency food and drink for your family.
PRO-RATION premium meal packs offer tasty, natural food made from real ingredients, with a very long shelf life thanks to special technology.
