Snickers Workwear functional base layers

Spending time outdoors in cold weather is enjoyable and good for your health when your body stays dry and warm. How can you dress to support your body throughout a long day of work or hiking? The answer is knowing how to layer your clothing.

Whether you need clothing for everyday work, a long hike, jobs around the house or outdoor fun with your children, all these activities have one thing in common: being active in the cold. How can you stay comfortable, feel good and protect your health in challenging conditions?

You might think dressing for cold weather is simple: just pile on as many clothes as possible and you will be warm. Sweating is what makes it tricky. Your body cools down much faster when it is damp, and you soon start to feel cold. If you cannot get indoors to warm up, it will not be long before you fall ill.

Another concern is freedom of movement. If you bundle up in thick clothing, you cannot move freely and comfortably. What you actually need is clothing designed to move with you. Not all base layers, fleeces and jackets offer this.

Three-layer dressing

The solution is to use a three-layer clothing system that lets you move freely. The layers do not need to be as thick and warm as possible, because each layer has its own specific role.

The base layer is the foundation

In this article, we explain how to choose the most important layer in a three-layer clothing system: the first layer. The base layer matters because it is in direct contact with your skin, giving it the greatest influence on how you feel and how well you stay. A wisely chosen base layer makes you significantly more comfortable, while the wrong choice can do considerable harm, even leaving you chilled and ill.

For the same reason, Snickers Workwear pays particular attention to developing functional base layer clothing. We have selected two of the best premium Snickers Workwear thermal base layer sets for the TAMREX range: a lighter technical base layer set and a warmer base layer set containing merino wool.

Snickers Workwear technical base layers

A functional base layer top and bottoms are the best choice if your working days involve plenty of physical activity. They are also ideal if you are looking for premium base layers for training.

Unique technical fabric

Made from a special moisture-wicking synthetic fabric, these base layers feel warm and soft against your skin. The fabric is exceptionally durable and looks as good as new even after years of frequent use and repeated washing.

The stretchy fabric, made from polyamide and nylon fibres, keeps your skin dry when you are active by transferring moisture vapour to the next layer, where it can safely remain around your body and keep you warm. This keeps your skin dry and prevents your body from cooling down.

The polypropylene components make the fabric pleasantly soft against your skin and help retain warmth.

We strongly recommend trying on the base layers before buying and choosing a size that fits comfortably close to your body, as they work most effectively in contact with your skin.

Seamlessly varying knit structures

You will notice varying knit structures in the technical base layers, with smooth, seamless transitions between them. These serve different purposes in different areas of your body.

A thicker knit over the large muscles, shoulders and kidney area provides insulation and support. In areas where you sweat more, such as your underarms, back and chest, and the groin area of the bottoms, the fabric structure is more open and breathable.

Soft against your skin

The base layers feel very soft against your skin and will not cause painful chafing, even during hours of intense activity. Tried, tested and approved by marathon runners!

Moves with your body

With cuts that follow your body's natural shape, these base layers fit like a glove. You will hardly notice or feel them, leaving you free to focus on the task at hand.

Attractive, sporty design

Although designed as underwear, these base layers have a stylish, sporty look, and you can easily wear the top as a functional shirt. Wear it on its own in warmer weather, or under a fleece, merino wool jumper or windproof jacket when it is cooler.

If you regularly head out on fitness trails or want to improve your everyday comfort at work, add a Snikcers Workwear technical base layer set to your functional clothing wardrobe. Together with your other clothing, it offers a range of layering options to suit the weather and the intensity of your planned activity.

Washing and care

When washing the base layer top and bottoms, you can confidently use a 60 °C programme. This also gets rid of bacteria that survive in water at 30–40 °C.

Customer feedback from a manufacturing company

Employees working in the deep-freeze and chilled storage rooms at fish processing company Vettel OÜ have been using Snickers Workwear technical base layer sets for years.

Ele Roosimaa, Development Manager at Vettel OÜ: “Our employees’ wellbeing is very important to us. Our warehouse staff do physically demanding work all year round. They spend around 60% of their working time either in a deep-freeze room at –24 °C or in a chilled storage room, which is slightly warmer but more humid. We were looking for answers to two important questions: how to better protect our employees’ health from the cold and how to help them feel more comfortable at work.

Snickers Workwear technical base layers provided the solution. The quality is very good and the price is reasonable. Since we introduced these base layers, our employees have no longer been troubled by frequent colds.

Our employees are extremely happy with the thermal base layers and wear them every day. They now have several sets each, which means each set lasts considerably longer.

I can confidently say that base layers, or thermal work underwear, have become a very important part of how we clothe our employees. The Snickers Workwear thermal base layer set fully meets our expectations.”

Customer feedback from an amateur athlete

Amateur athlete Urmas Põldre: “I have been running marathons for decades! Over that time, I have used a wide variety of sports gear. A Snickers Workwear base layer set did not seem like an obvious choice to me, but it was interesting enough to try.

In my experience, these base layers feel considerably nicer to wear than technical base layers from well-known sports brands: they are exceptionally soft, comfortable and gentle on the skin. When my skin is wet, running downwind in Snickers base layers actually has a cooling effect. As well as being functional, I think they look very good too.

Just one question remains: why are these base layers called Snickers WORKwear rather than Snickers SPORTSwear, a name I believe they 100% deserve.

Snikcers Workwear technical base layers with merino wool

The warm Snickers Workwear base layer top and bottoms with merino wool are a further development of the technical base layers described above. You need this set when the weather turns colder and your activity levels vary throughout the day.

The 45% merino wool content adds wool’s natural properties to these stretchy technical base layers, including antibacterial properties and the ability to absorb moisture and keep you warm even when damp.

Insulation and ventilation

The varied knit structures incorporated into the one-piece construction of the top and bottoms make these garments functional, providing targeted support for the needs of different areas of your body.

In areas where you sweat more, the top’s knit transitions smoothly to a thinner structure without seams. In places, it even becomes mesh-like to transfer excess body heat away more quickly and keep your skin dry. Over your kidneys, however, the knit is denser and more insulating. At the lower arms and lower legs, and in parts of the back, the knit has a terry-like inner surface, with a looped fabric structure that retains more body heat.

High collar

The high collar is one of this base layer top’s greatest advantages. Made from a double layer of fabric, it is optimally sized: high enough to cover your entire neck and keep it warm, yet low enough not to restrict your freedom of movement. The collar fits comfortably around your neck, and the zip lets you adjust the microclimate when needed. Open the zip to release excess heat and close it again to keep from getting cold. At the top, the end of the zip tucks under a soft, folded-over piece of fabric so it does not rub against your chin.

No lengthwise seams

The base layer top has no lengthwise seams on the sleeves or torso, and there are no seams across the tops of the shoulders either. During prolonged, highly active use, such as long backpacking hikes, active working days and training sessions, these are precisely the sensitive areas where seams can start to chafe. This top’s design eliminates those risks. The only seams are on the raglan sleeves, and even these are soft and stretchy.

The base layer bottoms also have no outer leg seams. The soft, stretchy seams along the inner thighs do not chafe or cause discomfort.

Soft against your skin

The merino fabric feels very soft against your skin, with no prickling or itching!

Moves with your body

Cut to follow your body’s natural shape, these merino base layers fit you perfectly. You will hardly notice or feel them, leaving you free to focus on what you are doing.

Attractive, sporty design

Although designed as a base layer, the top has a stylish, sporty look, so you can wear it on its own as a functional top. Wear it alone in warmer weather, or under a fleece, merino jumper or windbreaker when it is cooler.

Customer comment: Long-distance runner Roman Fosti likes a high collar

Well-known long-distance runner Roman Fosti came to TAMREX. Well acquainted with what various leisurewear and sportswear brands offer, he was looking for a good, warm base layer top with a proper high collar.

After trying Snickers Workwear technical merino base layers, the runner fell in love with them straight away. The collar is Fosti’s favourite feature: high enough, comfortably thin, snug around the neck and zipped so it can be opened to release excess heat when needed.

Fosti runs in his merino top when the weather turns cold and he needs to retain more warmth. In winter, when the temperature drops further, his thighs and lower legs need extra warmth too. That is when Roman Fosti wears Snickers Workwear merino long johns under his thin tracksuit bottoms.

How do you choose base layers for the day ahead?

Lightweight technical base layers

Lightweight technical base layers made from soft synthetic fabric work very well if you are moderately or highly active, provided the weather is not wintry and you can change clothes, go somewhere warm or put on a warmer layer straight after physical activity. In warmer weather, the top works brilliantly as a functional work or sports shirt, allowing moisture to evaporate quickly and keeping you feeling dry and comfortable for longer.

Technical base layers with merino wool

Base layers containing merino wool are suitable for a wider range of conditions. When the weather is colder and your activity level is high, moderate or variable, wear Snickers Workwear merino wool base layers. They keep you warm and wick away moisture. If your activity level changes, the wool keeps you warm even when slightly damp. This means you do not have to worry about getting chilled.

Mid-layer and outer layer

Staying dry, comfortable and comfortably warm depends not only on your choice of base layer, but also on your mid-layer and outer layer. Your body's individual characteristics are another factor in this complex equation. At one end of the spectrum are people who always feel cold, and at the other, those who always feel hot. Learning to combine different layers to support your body's needs takes time and experimentation.

Socks

Let’s also look at socks, which have a significant impact on your comfort at work. There are days and situations when you need thin, functional work and sports socks. If your feet need more protection from the cold, you need merino wool socks.

Thin, functional work socks

In the same conditions where you would choose thin technical base layers, choose thin, functional socks too.

Merino wool socks

In cool and cold weather, we recommend wearing lightweight, medium-weight or warm merino wool socks to suit your needs. Stock your functional clothing wardrobe with a variety of merino wool socks, as the weather changes and your work pace varies.

The greatest advantage of merino wool socks is that they keep you warm even when damp. In cold weather, this natural property of merino wool is especially useful when you become more active and your feet start to sweat.

The TAMREX sock range includes a variety of merino wool socks offering different levels of warmth.
